Manifesto

Overview

We set out with a simple goal to create a site which delivers a rich experience, is low impact and accessible. On this page we have set out the principles we have adhered to in creating a low impact site, the site's current energy use and what that means and how we have approached accessibility.

We hope that in documenting our process, the principles that we have applied, and by prompting users to consider their browsing decisions we can educate and inform. The site will continue to be developed, responding to feedback and to the different content which is being exhibited.

These 10 principles have been adhered to in the creation of Without Form:
1. Use ‘low quality’ bitmap images for preview
2. Only serve higher resolution images and video when requested
3. Use system fonts, with one weight only throughout
4. Limit the amount of light emitted by the screen
5. Inform the user of the impact of their browsing behavior
6. Store data locally on the user’s device to minimize data transfer
7. Compress all data to the greatest extent possible
8. Help users find information in fewer steps, reducing time on site
9. Prompt users to close the site if not actively in use
10. Host on a 100% renewable hosting environment
Energy Use So Far

We thought you would like to know the amount of energy the site uses as you browse and the resulting carbon emissions. We have developed an algorithm to calculate the amount of carbon you produce when you visit the site.

This is then logged into the overall total every time you refresh this page.

It takes into account:

Device (ie. mobile or desktop)

Time on site

Amount of content loaded (this looks at bytes of data – bitmap image will generate less)

How many pages you visit

Return visit or not? (there will be browser caching if visited recently)

Designing for Accessibility

This website is run by University of the Arts London (UAL). This accessibility statement applies to this website. Other websites and browser based systems on the arts.ac.uk domain have their own accessibility statements.

This website uses HTML 5 (HyperText Mark-up Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to render content. We have also used other technologies including JavaScript on certain areas of the website.

We commit to ensuring this website is as accessible as possible and we want as many people as possible to be able to use it. This means that you should be able to:

  • — Access the website regardless of the device and browser you are using
  • — Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • — Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • — Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • — Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).
  • — We use Recite Me on the website, which is a cloud based accessibility and machine translation tool. Recite Me allows you to customise our website content so that you can consume it ways that work for you.

Dark Mode

This will switch the site between ‘mostly white’ to ‘mostly black’. Turning this on reduces energy consumption.

Simplified Layout

This switch will disable non-essential code and remove javascript animations, helping to reduce C02 consumption during your visit.

Bitmap images

All images will appear as low res bitmaps by default to help reduce energy consumption during your visit. Switch this off to view images in hi-res.

Type size

Use the plus/minus to increase/decrease the size of the text. This has no effect on energy use.
